What is a business plan?

A business plan explains what your business does, who it serves, how it makes money, and what it needs to grow. Founders use it to raise funding, align a team, and pressure-test the model before spending. A solid plan covers the summary, market, product, operations, team and financials — though a lean one-page plan or Lean Canvas is often enough to start. These free business plan templates range from a single page to a full investor-ready document and export to PDF and Word.

Professional, Export-Ready Formatting

Every template has fill-in fields you can customize. Edit and rewrite the text with our built-in AI-enabled document editor, then export to PDF or Word.

Business Plans — frequently asked questions

An executive summary, the problem and your solution, market size, traction, the business model, the team, financial projections, and a specific funding ask with a use of funds. An ask without a use of funds and a milestone is a number, not a plan.
Fifteen to twenty-five pages for a full plan, plus appendices. Investors read the summary and skim the rest, so front-load everything that matters. A hundred-page plan signals you cannot separate the important from the interesting.
Traction, by a distance. One line of revenue from paying customers outweighs a page of forecast. In descending order of persuasiveness: revenue, signed letters of intent, active users with a retention curve, a waitlist, a survey.
Increasingly a deck plus a financial model does the work. But writing the plan is how you find the holes in your own reasoning — which is worth doing whether or not anyone reads it.
